Granny Square Sampler Afghan- week 2

Granny Square Week 2
Granny Square Week 2
(Find links to all the assignments on this page.)

How did everyone do on last week’s squares? If you haven’t finished those, or are still trying to get them down, no worries. This week we’ll be doing the same traditional granny square, but we’re all about quantity this time around. These repetitive ones will have you mastering this square in no time!
Square 3, Traditional Granny Square with 3 rounds– Make anywhere between 10-14 of these (more if you want, but keep the number even)
Design tip- IF (and only if) you have designated one of your yarn colors as a ground color (one you’ll be using more of), make sure at least 4 of these squares have this color as the 3rd round. For example, I’d like a lot of cream in my afghan, so I would make a some of these with cream as the 3rd round.

For clarity’s sake, I will post the basic instructions on how to make these here. If you want to watch the video that I refer to below, go to the bottom of this post. With first color, ch4, join with a sl st to form a ring.
Rnd 1- Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 2 dc in center of the ring, *ch 2, 3 dc in center of the ring* rep from * 2 more times, join with a sl st to top of beg ch 3. End off.
To add a new color– make a slip knot on your hook, pull through any previous round’s corner space w/hook, leaving yarn on the back, then chain 3 for your first dc and keep going.
Rnd 2- (using 2nd color). Starting in one of the ch 3 spaces from the previous round; join new color by ch 3. 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc. (You just made a corner.) *In next ch 2 space (work 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc)*, rep from * 2 more times, join with a sl st to top of beginning ch 3. End off.
Rnd 3- (using 3rd color). Join at any ch 2 corner space; join new color by ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc. *(Work 3 dc in 3 dc space on sides, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in corner space)* Rep from *2 more times, joine with a sl st to the top of beg 3 ch. End off.
OK, a few questions came up last week that I wanted to answer.
*I don’t know if the size of my finished granny square is the correct size, is it? What is the right size?

Actually, yes it is. There is no gauge swatch needed, no final measurements for each square that you have to aim for. The only thing I will say is that whatever gauge you crochet at, that’s what gauge you need for this project. Just keep it consistent and you’ll be fine.
*Do I turn my work after each round the way the lady does in the video?
No, and here’s why. When I crochet a round, I carry the tails from the new color I’m adding on the new round and the tail from the previous round on the back of my work. So, essentially I need a back of the work. It doesn’t really look like a back to anyone who uses this afghan, but the tails are all on that side, and if I turned my work with each round, you would be able to see the tails on both sides. How you do it is up to you. I see what the bonus is of doing it this way if you are doing a solid granny square though.
As always, leave questions in the comment section and I will try to answer.
Have fun!

I have always loved granny squares, but I am a terrible crochet/knitter, I have tried so many times, been taught by my mom, my sister, my grandma, and my mom and sister again….but it just won’t stick. Should I try again? I’ve been reading your blog for years, and it’s definitely one of my favorites. I love your style.

Yay! I’m so excited for the new assignment, too! Thank you so much for taking the time to figure this out and organize it. We’re planning a West Virginia camping trip this weekend, so I’ll have plenty of time to crochet in the car. And I’ll make sure to remember my scissors this time. I ended up using toe nail clippers on the last trip. Happy weekend to you!

Well I think I’m about done for this week. I did 10 but will probably add a couple more today.
Blogged about the project here: http://littlepearstudio.blogspot.com/2012/05/granny-square-sampler.html
Thanks again for a great project. I got up yesterday thinking, “great it’s Friday, gotta go see what Blair has for us this week”.

I’m curious. Should we be taking care of our loose ends now as we go along? Or do we stitch those all in when we finish the whole thing? Thanks!
