Stepping Stones quilt featuring Denyse Schmidt’s Winter Walk fabric, #myquiltcouldlivehere

Stepping Stones Winter Walk
I recently took a bit of a break from upcycling fabric for my quilts to make a quilt with new fabric.
What would make me do such a radical thing, you ask?
Denyse Schmidt fabrics, of course! Her newest fabric collection for Free Spirit, Winter Walk, is a tribute to the quiet stillness of nature in Winter. This collection was the inspiration for my newest quilt pattern, Stepping Stones, which is a play on the idea of a Winter walk.
Although, to be honest, I am much more of a “enjoy Winter from the window” kind of girl, I’m not gonna lie.

The throw size of this quilt uses a complete set of Winter Walk fat quarters, with a few of Denyse’s Modern Solids thrown in. Based on a very old traditional block pattern, the patterning of this updated version plays with the light and dark value in the printed fabrics you use, and creates the illusion of overlapping squares. I decided to ground these blocks with white and variations of white in the center squares. There’s lots of beautiful whites and creams in Winter, so why use only one?

Stepping Stones is available as a printed pattern, or PDF

There’s also a helpful, supplemental video available for visual help in using the template and creating the blocks!

This pattern gives all the size and yardage information for all sizes from a 25″ square floor pillow (big favorites around here) to a King sized quilt, with all the sizes in between.

And let’s talk about where this quilt would live-
Stepping Stones Winter Walk Collage
I think you can probably guess where this quilt would live. In the midst of snow-covered trees, in a cabin with a roaring fire, by me, looking oh so effortlessly cool in my most comfy jeans.
