Bountiful Blog Tour and a Giveaway!

I’m excited to be today’s stop on Sharon Holland’s Bountiful Holiday Blog Tour, and was more than happy to spend some time sewing with Sharon’s beautiful fabric collection.
The Bountiful fabrics are in a muted and serene palette of blues, rusty reds, and some yellows thrown in, “a celebration of the beauty and natural resources of Midwest America“. Muted is not a palette I usually use, so all the more reason to jump in, right? I decided to pull out the color and tonal values of the entire range, and made a mini version of my Stepping Stones quilt pattern. This pattern allows for some value play where the on point squares appear to overlap each other, creating a layered effect. Its a pretty cool effect! What I liked about using Sharon’s range for this pattern is that the fabrics are all very similar in color value, there are only a few that are “dramatically” darker or lighter.

But I love to “force” the value differences, trusting the process and my own eye. I divide up the fabrics, cut and piece, and do all the “up close” work first. After all that is done, I start to put blocks up on the design wall. And, if I’ve done it right, I stand back, and suddenly see a pattern and dimension emerge.

Once the blocks were pieced, I decided quiet, less quilting felt right on this mini Stepping Stones quilt. I freemotioned some easy flower motifs in the solid cream on point squares, and just ditch stitched between the squares themselves with my walking foot.

And there were two perfect blue prints to combine and create a scrappy binding.

Thanks for letting me play Sharon!
