DIY Acorn Christmas Ornaments

DIY Christmas Ornaments

Making Christmas ornaments is one of my absolute favorite holiday crafts. Because of it, we have way too many, there is rarely room on the tree for all of them. But I can’t stop myself! I made these as a quick, small little acorn ornaments to sell at some holiday fairs and I wanted to share them here. I am really inspired by nature these days… sketching it or altering bits of it here and there. These little stuffed acorns can be used as ornaments, garland, and package toppers. You can get all your supplies together and make a batch of them relatively quick.

And seriously, what’s cuter than a little acorn?

Materials:

  • Real acorn caps. I found the larger ones seemed to work best, but you can adjust the fabric acorn part to the fit any size cap.
  • Fabric Scraps measuring approximately 3 inches square. You’ll need 1 scrap for each acorn.
  • Hand sewing needle and thread.
  • Stuffing
  • Hot Glue
  • Scrap yarn or string for using as an ornament

To Make:

  1. Cut a circle shape from a scrap of fabric, roughly 2 3/4″ in diameter. This does not need to be exact, and you should adjust the size of circle you cut to fit your caps, this is just the size that worked well for me.
  2. Using a needle and doubled thread, hand sew a running stitch around the fabric circle, 1/4 inch in from the cut edge. Leave a long tail on both ends.DIY Christmas Ornaments
  3. Pull at both ends of the thread tails slightly to gather and begin to close the circle. Add a bit of stuffing, gently pushing it in and shaping the acorn. Continue until the acorn is stuffed. Pull the tails together to knot securely at top.DIY Christmas Ornaments
  4. Using a bit of hot glue, secure the cap to the acorn.
  5. If using as an ornament, hot glue some scrap yarn to the top.DIY Christmas Ornament
