Friendship Bracelet Quilt Pattern Version 2

I’ve been wanting to play with my Friendship Bracelet quilt pattern again. Someone once asked if this pattern could be done with pre-cut jelly rolls, and after the Jelly Roll Race quilt and the Echo Star, I decided to actually try it. I thought it should work, but wanted to sew one up to be sure. Plus, this quilt is so quick to sew up, I knew it would be a relatively fast project.

Leave it to me to say out loud that I am not one to do a quilt in only one line of fabrics, and what do I do? Shop for lines of jelly rolls to turn into this quilt! I decided on a jelly roll of Denyse Schmidt’s newest line Shelburne Falls. I love all of Denyse’s fabric lines, mainly because they feel more gathered and less matched up.
But then, what solids to pair with the prints? On the original Friendship Bracelet, I used colors of sand to contrast with the “bracelet” strips. After an evening staring at my Kona color card, I decided to continue the beach theme with this new version play with some “watery” blues.
These colors and fabrics were looking kind of wild together early on, there’s a lot of contrast. But stitch things together and cover them with quilting and suddenly they all look pretty happy together!

I backed it with a black print from the same line, and did a scrappy binding combining one of the blues from the water strips and what I had left from the backing. After pin basting using my favorite new method, I machine quilted it with straight lines using my walking foot. Soooo boring to do, but I love the texture!  And I am loving Aurifil 50 wt thread, it quilts beautifully, not too thick, and it’s strong.

Love the masculine feel of this quilt! Always looking for good color combinations for my boys. The straight line quilting is perfect with this pattern.

“feel more gathered and less matched up. ” — yes, that’s such a good way to talk about how her fabrics go together!
