Granny Square Sampler Project- Week 8

Granny Square Sampler
We are hard at work on Emma’s room this week (pictures soon) and there is, as always, quite a bit of DIY involved. In fact, there are consecutive projects going on all over the house. Kind of chaotic! This all means no time for much crochet this week, as lovely as that sounds. But I did manage to complete half of this week’s assignment, I’m hoping to finish the rest over the weekend. I turned to my trusty crochet pinterest board and found one that I think adds some nice variety to our sampler. The Sunburst. This one feels retro to me, kind of 70’s, is that what you see? Anyway, her directions are written a little differently than what I’m used to. For example, she indicates the number of times you make a stitch after the stitch, (For example: “R1: Working in ring, sc 16“.) You’ll get it, I think this granny square is pretty straightforward.

The Sunburst- (12/28/21- The link to the original pattern no longer works, but a helpful crocheter helped me find the pattern. No process photos to share, but its not a terribly difficult block hopefully!)

Make 2 of these this week, and make sure they look quite different from each other color-wise.

Sunburst Granny Square Crochet Pattern

Ch 8; sl st into first ch to form ring.

R1: Working in ring, sc 16

R2: Dc 2 in each sc around; sl st into 1st dc of round.

R3: Ch 3; tc in the next 2 dc; *ch 3; sk one dc; tc in next 3 dc*; ch 3; sl st into 3rd ch from beginning of round. You should now have 8 clusters, each containing 3 tc. Fasten off and change colors.

R4: Sl st new color into one of the 3 ch spaces. *In 3ch space, dc 4; ch 4; in next 3 ch space, sc 4; ch 4*; sl st into 1st dc of round. Fasten off and change colors.

R5: Sl st new color into one of the 4 ch spaces just before one of the sc clusters from the last round. *Dc 4; sk 1st sc, dc in next sc; dc 2 in next sc; dc in next sc; dc 4 in 4 ch sp; sk 1st dc; dc 3 in next dc; ch 2, sk dc; dc 3 in next dc*; sl st in 1st dc of round.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

And here’s an optional challenge this week for anyone that wants to try it- add in a very random color, one that doesn’t look quite right with the original palette you planned and gathered for this sampler. Use it in small, but noticeable chunks in the next few weeks. You may be pleasantly surprised at what you see!
