Each of these handmade pincushions are completely unique, no two are ever alike. The bases are created by ceramic artist Kristen Ballou, and the tops are created by me. A small, but important sewing supply that adds beauty to your creative space, and truly feels comforting to hold in your hand.
The shapes for Kristen’s pieces are inspired by the every day Japanese teacup. “Yunomi” is your favorite cup and is the one you reach for most. Its comforting to hold in your hand, a pleasure to use. Using porcelain clay, her cups are made using a variety of glazes. This base is a partially glazed blue dip on white, unglazed clay. Two small holes are threaded with a hand dyed silk Perle cotton in an acid green.
The tops of this collection are hand done cyanotype printed velvet. Also known commonly as “sun prints”, it requires a multi-step process of first treating the fabric with the appropriate chemicals to facilitate the reaction to the sun. The prints are various bits of foliage native to the Pacific Northwestern United States. The top of this one is more heavily printed, so an overall mix of medium and light blues with bits of dark blue.
Keep this special pincushion on your work table to remind you of the time honored tradition of beautiful, thoughtful handwork.
