Each of these handmade pincushions are completely unique, no two are ever alike. A years-long collaboration. The bases are created by ceramic artist Kristen Ballou, and the tops are created by me. A small, but important sewing supply that adds beauty to your creative space, and truly feels comforting to hold in your hand.
From Kristen- “The natural colors of our landscapes is a good constant when everything else around you seems to be anything but. So I crafted these with that in mind. It is still the small wonders, little gestures, tiny nuances that grab for our attention, reminding us of the details in life that are still worthy of our affection and notice. Like a maker’s pincushion, a most valuable tool, so loyal and always at the wait. And these are glazed in nature’s finest palette, turquoise, pale blue-gray, a buff ivory, matte yellow and glassy green. Made of thrown stoneware and in colors of both the Northwest (my home) and the Southwest (Blair’s new home). I hope they find a sweet spot in yours. “
The shapes for Kristen’s pieces are inspired by the every day Japanese teacup. “Yunomi” is your favorite cup and is the one you reach for most. Comforting to hold in your hand, a pleasure to use. Made of stoneware, the finish of this cup is in a beautiful glossy green glaze. The four small holes in the cup are threaded with a blue Perle cotton thread.
I make the tops of these based on how the base inspires me once Kristen sends them to me. The top of this one is cut is gingham check stitched with a chicken scratch embroidery pattern, done in various shades of blues. There is a blue Perle cotton X stitched directly into holes fired directly into the base.
Keep this special pincushion on your work table to remind you of the time honored tradition of beautiful, thoughtful handwork.
