I spent a week in Taos in the Summer of 2022 working on a personal project. I wanted to explore the idea of the scraps a quilt maker makes, keeps, and uses.

How small is too small?

I brought very limited materials with me for the retreat, so that I could really focus on that question. Color seemed to be the biggest motivation for each of these pieces. They were all such a joy to make.

No. 8 is classic Courthouse Steps block. Cuttings from larger blocks and quilts I’d worked on earlier in the year, a Japanese taupe fabric and a scrap of vintage Japanese indigo that I have treasured. The warm rust center represents the the union of the sides.
