Apartment Therapy Tour

I am very honored (and, quite frankly, a little nervous) to have our home toured on Apartment Therapy today, please take a look. When I was asked by Andie if I wanted to do this, Peter and I had to think hard about it. We are not decorators, we don’t have expensive, iconic pieces that make others drool. But I decided to do the tour because I think what we do have is a home filled with us. Our home is filled with love, lots of handmade things, and we’ve made it a very comfortable, livable space. My hope is that our home shows that you don’t have to spend a lot of money to create a comfortable, lively space that you can feel proud of.
Enjoy!

Love it! And love your description of home – that it’s “filled with us.” That’s exactly how it should be. (Nice to see our silhouettes on the wall too!)

I want to know about the round objects on your wall that appear to be fanned-out books. Am I right? Love your home – so interesting.

So before I got into my “ohmywordiloveyourhouse” treatise….
umHELLOoo! The Girl with the Pearl Earring string art!!!!!!! Seriously? Gollygosh I love it. LOVE it. What an incredible idea! The second I saw it I gasped. Honest to goodness gasped.
And the kitchen. The white tile. The expanse of counterspace. Gleamy.
    Those little log paintings.
The book foldings in the bedroom.
The kitchy mexican blankie, helmety, posterized area.
    The grey sofa.
    STUDIO.
Are those komforte chocolates fabric art? Love!
    Quilty happy.
    Dining table.
    Windows!
    Welcome…can I steal that idea?
    Should I keep going?
I have to say that magazine homes are not lived in homes. And I love lived in homes. They’re real. Personal. Love y’alls home. Our home is really traditional/vintagey. And I really like how you have a mingle of tradional stuff, mid-century modern, your own vibe, etc.
    The STRING ART! *sigh*

I totally agree and I am DYING over the string art. Amazing, perfect choice of subject … the box around it. That was indeed worth a “teaser”.

AT commenters are always so catty — I’d be nervous, too! But it looked great! I don’t remember you showing off the string art. Did I miss something? It’s very cool.

I don’t comment often but I LOVE pics of your home! It just seems so happy! The books you have piled on the desk, with the vase of flowers on top just took me back to my childhood! We used to have those books! I spent hours reading them! I wonder where they are now?

Thank you so much Laura. I had a dread that folks would feel it looked cluttered and I’m sure some do, but I decided it had to feel like us or why do it. If its staged, its not us. So, thank you for appreciating that! And steal any idea you want! : D

They certainly can be. There’s always gonna be haters. But honestly, I get tired of seeing tours of second homes on beautiful islands. Real life deserves some space too : D

Brittany, thank you for reading and taking the time to comment! I hope our home is happy. Life is not always happy, but hopefully we can come home to a place that helps us feel good about the world.
Those Childcraft books are treasures to me, and the kids. I bought the set for $4.99 at a thrift store several years ago and they are worth so much more than that to me now!!

Hi Blair, I love the pictures of your home, you can really see your and Peter’s personality come through! I would love to know more about the poster on the wall above the Lost in Translation poster, the black and white with red cycling poster. My husband is a cycling nut too (we are in Seattle) and he would love something like that. Thanks!

You are absolutely right! It’s not about money. You can create a home by designing things in a way that reflects the positive qualities of the people who live inside. The single picture at the top of your post shows such a bright and comfortable image, so good job on that!
