Disappearing Nine Patch Quilt

disappearing nine patch
This is the disappearing nine patch quilt I started back in October. As happens with so many other projects, once the blocks were done, but not yet assembled, I had to take them down from the design wallto work on other things. Once I saw a minute to work on this quilt, I pulled out them blocks. They were a snap to put together (it helped that I took a photo of the layout on the wall before I took it down). In the original how-to, I set up several layouts of these blocks, but in the end I love this one because of the dimensional effect of the two smaller blocks appearing to be one block behind the other two blocks.

Most of these fabrics are by Denyse Schmidt, the Florence collection, plus some other prints from my stash. I kept thinking of boxer short prints, which made me smile.
The back is solid Kona with a couple of stripes and blocks places within the solid areas. Inspired by the swirly effect of the shapes in so many of the prints, I free motion quilted the entire quilt with ad-libbed loops.
The binding is the backing fabric.
I’m determined to get a few more unfinished projects done now that I have a little more time. I said something about this on Instagram, and Pam declared she was with me. What about you? Do you have unfinished projects taking up too much physical and mental space? Let’s make 2014 the year of finishing! (#theyearoffinishing) I have some special plans for this quilt, and it involves YOU. Details coming very soon.
