Granny Square Sampler Project- Week 5
This week, we’re going to do 2 different grannies. Both with a circle in a square shape. I was thinking we definitely needed some of these type of square in our sampler. So without further ado, here is this week’s assignment.
(Find all the assignments listed on this page.)
1. The Granny Square with a Circle Center– Make 4
You knew this one would eventually show up, right?
So, crochet these following the tutorial I made way back when, using and picking colors as your heart desires. Remember, the beauty of a sampler is that you “sample” your color mixes as well as your squares. Try a completely the square solid, or 2-color, or do it as originally written up. You pick.

2. The Squircle V 3– Make 3
I have had the image of this granny square pinned to my crochet pinterest board for a while, I love the simple straightforward look of it. I asked Deb, the creator, if I could include it as one of the squares in our project, and she kindly said yes. Her instructions are very easy to follow, I’ve already made several. (To make the 2 color version, you will change your yarn color before beginning round 4.) I will note that she makes her center circle/beginning circle differently than I do. Give it a try. Just follow her instructions, and you’ll get it quickly.
There are some gorgeous squares showing up in the Flickr Group. Thank you to everyone who posted!
As always, any questions on these squares, leave it in the comments.
Enjoy!

June 15, 2012 at 12:00 pmWhen I have the time and the cash (I have 7 skeins of Debbie Bliss Cashmerino begging to be made into this, but the extra 5 balls is not something my purse can countinence right now) I will on to this! It’s the sweet project I’ve been hoping for, but the baby quilts, hubbie jumper, king size quilt and grannie cowl must be done. Thank you for the time running this project, it looks wonderful and I do love your style.

June 16, 2012 at 5:21 amThanks for this grannys.
But I have a question : for the sampler, we make the 6° round ? because on your photos, there is only 5 round.
And to make the 2 color version, we must change before round 4, isn ‘t it ?
thanks you for your response.

June 16, 2012 at 7:53 amYou are welcome! I think you are talking about the 2nd granny square above? Mine does have 6 rounds, not 5, and yes, you do change yarn color for after round 4. Hope that helps!

June 18, 2012 at 7:52 amI have the same questions as Gwenaelle… in your photo I only see 5 rounds and the color change is done BEFORE round 4…
blair/wisecraft
June 18, 2012 at 7:57 amGwenaelle, I was wrong and should have looked more closely, you do change color before round 4, not before round 5. So sorry, I hope I didn’t confuse you too much!

June 18, 2012 at 7:57 amHi Jill, you are correct, the color change is done before round 4 and I revised the instructions to reflect that. So sorry for any confusion, thank you!

June 20, 2012 at 4:45 pmI am having so much fun doing these!! It has become rather obsessive. I am more of a knitter so this is a good “lesson”!! I am having trouble with Squircle v-3 but I’ll keep trying. I always end up with a couple of extra spaces when going from circle to square….that would be row 4. I’ve started over 4 times. WHAT is wrong with me??? But so much fun. Thank you for doing this. I started a week ago and have caught up to week 5.

June 21, 2012 at 6:28 pmI am having trouble too with the squircle I got two done already but my third one is not coming out so good. I am having trouble on row 5. Yes this is fun and very encouraging. Thank you for doing this

June 22, 2012 at 7:36 amHmmm…I’m having trouble with the second type of circles within a square. The final product looks NOTHING what you’ve shown above. Maybe my learning style and the pattern maker’s teaching style (I’m clicking the link for instructions) aren’t meshing. When you get to row 3 what did you do? row 4? This is where I’m having the issue. 🙁

June 22, 2012 at 8:22 amLet me see if I can help. Firstly, you will switch to a new color between rnds 3 and 4. You will join the new yarn color in any ch 2 space. Ch 3 (equals 1 dc), 2 dc, ch 2, and 3 all in same space, to set up your first corner. From there, if you start at the 2nd sentence of the instructions, “Ch 1…” can you keep going from there? I hope this helps. Let me know.

June 22, 2012 at 8:24 amYou already got 2 of them right, so hopefully starting over and going slowly on the 3rd one will get it. You can do it! Let me know specifics and I will try to help. Thanks Akhila

June 22, 2012 at 8:25 amHmmmmm, not sure where the extra spaces are showing up. Let me know specifics and I will try to help out. (I do this myself sometimes, then, like in knitting, something just clicks.) Thanks Marsha!

June 22, 2012 at 12:04 pmHi Blair I tried the third one and it came out just like the two. I had to do row 5 like over and over but It came out like yours I think. I already posted on flicker. I am snugglebunnie if you take a look.

June 22, 2012 at 12:19 pmHmmm I’m having a hard time with Squircle V-3. I’m not getting how to start it. I’ve chained 3 and put the 2 DC’s into the first chain, then I tried putting it in the 3rd chain – but it just makes a mess no circle.

June 22, 2012 at 1:08 pmHi Blair – I hope you don’t mind if I answer Amanda.
To start the circle, ch 3 and then work 12 dc into the 3rd ch from the hook. Then join with a sl st to the 1st dc. You will have 12 dc because the first 2 chs do not count as a stitch. I will get a picture on the pattern post (on my blog) for you.
I have also gone back to the squircle v-3 pattern post and changed the pattern to state where I changed the colors. 🙂

June 23, 2012 at 4:35 pmThanks so much!!! When copying the pattern I wrote 2 and not 12 – big difference lol 🙂

June 23, 2012 at 5:09 pmHi Blair – I just wanted to say thanks so much for organising this, it’s fantastic! I just started crocheting at the beginning of May and then came across this, so decided to give it a go. I have fallen a little behind but slowly, slowly getting there. I also had trouble with the squircle, simply because I haven’t read many patterns I think. But, I have done it, not sure if it’s actually correct but I think it looks pretty good so I’m going with it! I figure that’s the great thing about a sampler, even if it’s not exactly how the pattern says to do it, it will still work in the overall scheme of things! Thanks heaps.

June 25, 2012 at 9:47 pmHi Blair, I seem to be having trouble with the first version this week. I’m a relatively new crocheter, so I’m sure it’s something simple, but maybe you can help? The first 2 rounds are fine, but the third round is really puckered, it won’t sit flat. It’s as though I’m trying to squeeze in too many stitches and it all just bunches up, any ideas? I’m using an 8ply wool and not sure what size hook, I got it from an op shop and it isn’t marked, but about medium size. Up until now all of my squares are working out fine. If anyone has any ideas what I’m doing wrong, I’d be gratefully for suggestions! Thanks
Suzy
June 25, 2012 at 9:51 pmok ignore that – I’m such an idiot. Just reread the instructions (for the 10th time)! and immediately see what I am doing wrong. I knew it would be something obvious – I feel very silly! I am enjoying this despite my mistakes!
