I am excited to participating in Making Zen, happening May 4-8, 2026. (This is my 4th year!). Whether you’ve experienced this online retreat before, or are completely new to it, keep reading for details and how to sign up.
One of the things I enjoy about Making Zen is that Kate Ward of Zen Stitching, the founder, really leaves it up to us, the teachers, to craft a workshop for you. We all know the things we teach very well. I know I work hard to be sure that my workshop is accessible, easy to follow, and gives you a glimpse of who I am and what I do. In the past I have done workshops on how to add surface detail to your quilts, Chicken Scratch embroidered pillowcase trim, and a needle book.
This year I was thinking about what to teach and I looked at my work table in the studio and saw the one thing I have out and in use every day–my pincushion. It’s truly a quiet workhorse in my sewing space. We all have some version of something to hold our pins and needles. Why not have a pretty, handmade one?
Yunomi Pincushion
I will be walking you through making a pincushion inspired by the concept of the Yunomi teacup. In Japan, this is your favorite teacup, the one you want to use every day. It fits perfectly in your hand. And speaking as someone who uses a pincushion every day, I think it’s the perfect idea to translate into a sweet, pretty to look at and reach for pincushion.
I have make versions of these pincushions and sold them in the years past, but now I can show you how to make them so you can use scraps of fabrics you love, or tiny cups or vessels you may have on hand.
We’ll learn the Chicken Scratch embroidery pattern I call “X & O” to embellish a small piece of gingham check to create the top of the pincushion. You could absolutely make your pincushion without it, but I recommend having this little bit of hand stitching on the top to personalize it even further. ❌🅾️
