Granny Square Sampler Project- Week 13

Granny Square wk 13
This week’s granny square is brought to us by Beth (who is @cookiecat57 on Instagram- remember you can tag your photos on instagram with #grannysquaresampler so we can all see each other’s). I like this one because its quite different from the ones we’ve done over the past few weeks, retro, unusual, and just plain interesting. So let’s do it! It is called “The Whirlygig” and needs no introduction other than Beth’s photo, which she also kindly sent me.READ MORE

Granny Square Sampler Project- Week 12

I am a little embarrassed to admit that I am still behind on finishing my squares. Didn’t touch the crochet hook over the weekend. I fully intend to catch up. This whole week has been a flurry of crazy, which is mostly over now. Sitting down to crochet sounds just about perfect to me.

I’m glad some of you were able to use last week to play catch up on your squares. I myself still have a few squares to catch up on, so don’t dispair if this is you. We’ve been finishing Emma’s room, which I’ll be showing you hopefully next week!READ MORE

DIY Easy Tabletop Redo

I stole a few minutes to myself the other day and went thrifting. I came across this oil painting and found myself buying it. Wasn’t exactly sure why. I don’t see it on our walls, and don’t even particularly like it as a painting. I do like the colors a lot, and the composition isn’t bad at all. The price didn’t hurt either.

Granny Square Sampler Project- Week 9

How is everyone doing on the granny square sampler? Is everyone up to date on their squares? I know some have been crocheting on car trips and I am so jealous, I get car sick when I try. All that wasted passenger seat time!

This week I have a treat to share with you for our assignment today. I asked Erin if she would be willing to jump in and share a granny square for the sampler, and she graciously agreed. This week’s square is a sweet dimensional flower she chose for us.READ MORE

Teen Room Redo, Wall Decor Idea

Mother daughter collaborative projects in Emma’s room are turning out to be a lot of fun, thanks to Pinterest.
For about $6, we created our own wall art based on some ideas we pulled together.

DIY Wall Decor Idea

DIY Wall Decor Idea

This is an easy project. Perfect for a 13 year old girl like Emma. Here’s how we did our version.
Teen Room

DIY Wall Decor

Materials:
Thumbtacks
Craft paint and small paintbrush
Piece of scrap foam core or cardboard
Small round doilies
Cupcake liners
Yarn for pompoms
Pompom maker
Double stick tape
Scissors
To Make:
Teen Room
1. If you want the thumbtacks a different color, stick them into the scrap foamcore or cardboard to make it easier to paint them. We painted ours a bright green, 2 quick coats and they were done.
Teen Room
2. We decided to add some pom poms to the centers of some of our flowery shapes, so we made a handful of small ones.

3. To make the doilies into flowers, I folded 4 doilies in half, then overlapped them in quarters. You can attach them to the wall with double stick tape, and then add either a pom pom or a thumbtack in the center.

4. We started placing the cupcake baking liner “small flowers” in the area designated for this installation, then filled out and fanned from there, adding the doily “big flowers”, really just ad libbing as we went. I think the pom poms added some nice contrast, and we scattered those around and even addd some later on. In the end, I added the leftover thumb tacks plain, around the “branches”. This is on the wall above Emma’s bed, and we decided to keep it fairly tight because of the new bed she has coming soon.

Granny Square Sampler Project- Week 8

Granny Square Sampler
We are hard at work on Emma’s room this week (pictures soon) and there is, as always, quite a bit of DIY involved. In fact, there are consecutive projects going on all over the house. Kind of chaotic! This all means no time for much crochet this week, as lovely as that sounds. But I did manage to complete half of this week’s assignment, I’m hoping to finish the rest over the weekend. I turned to my trusty crochet pinterest board and found one that I think adds some nice variety to our sampler. The Sunburst. This one feels retro to me, kind of 70’s, is that what you see? Anyway, her directions are written a little differently than what I’m used to. For example, she indicates the number of times you make a stitch after the stitch, (For example: “R1: Working in ring, sc 16“.) You’ll get it, I think this granny square is pretty straightforward.

African Flower
(Find all the assignments for this entire project listed on this page.)
I am so excited for this week’s square! It’s great for you beginners who are still getting the basic stitches down, but sort of adds a little flare. I found the video early this week and starting playing around with the square on Wednesday and let’s just say I think this is one of the prettiest squares I’ve ever tried. A variation of the African Flower Granny Square, its going to measure around 4 1/2″ square or so, done in our weight of yarn.READ MORE

The DIY Project I Can No Longer Put Off

emmasroominspirationboard
Last year Peter and I talked with Emma about redoing her bedroom, but time got away from us and it just never happened. There was some much-needed purging and cleaning out done, but that was it. She’s now 7, I mean, 13. Lavender paint and sweet birdy paintings, nice as they may be, are not quite her style anymore. Far from it, actually.
