One of my favorite sections in Wise Craft Quilts, is the one about quilt labels. To me, this was a section that had to be included in the book- sewing a label on to the back of a quilt is such a huge part of the storytelling process. In the book are full sized labels in the book that can be printed out at home (I use these ink jet printable fabric sheets) and filled in. Even better? A set of all five labels, ready to use are available in my shop.)
While writing the book, I reached out to some of my favorite artists and asked them to design a quilt label. I was over the moon with what they sent back! Each label speaks to the style of the artist who made it, and interprets the idea of labelling a quilt in their own unique way. I’ll be posting interviews with each of these very inspiring women! Today is my interview with the super talented Pam Garrison. I’m asking her a little about her work, inspiration, work space, and her thoughts on creating a label for Wise Craft Quilts.

I often tell folks in my classes and lectures that when I made my first quilt, I didn’t know what I didn’t know. I stumbled through with the few skills I’d learned in college sewing classes and high school Home Ec, and managed to get that quilt made. In my eyes, usually finished IS better than perfect, that’s true. (No quilt I finish- or don’t finish- can be described as “perfect”.)READ MORE
I recently made a new version of the “Racer” quilt in Wise Craft Quilts. Made entirely of Tyvek and synthetic knit racing numbers. I’ve made several of these now, but this particular quilt was extra special. And, a bit difficult to make. Made in honor of a family friend who passed away very suddenly while cycling last Fall. He loved cycling and competitive racing, as was very good at it. As with any important project like this, the hardest part is getting started. Once I push through the start, I can quickly get into the flow. I was a good quilter and actually ditch stitched each and every seam. After that was done, I decided to free motion quilt cog shapes randomly around the quilt with black thread, as well as outline every number. Such an honor to have been entrusted to make this piece.

Have you discovered the magazine Knit Wit? A gorgeous magazine full of inspiring stories, eye candy, and all kinds of love for fiber-related things. I was honored to have a piece in Issue 6, which is available now. In it, I discuss more of the back story behind the Willy Loman quilt project in Wise Craft Quilts, and share a peek at its sister quilt, Turquoise Trail. Both of these quilts are part of what inspired me to write my book back when I made them from salesman sample swatches given to me by a friend. Funny how things happen.
