Teen Room Redo, Wall Decor Idea

Mother daughter collaborative projects in Emma’s room are turning out to be a lot of fun, thanks to Pinterest.
For about $6, we created our own wall art based on some ideas we pulled together.

DIY Wall Decor Idea

This is an easy project. Perfect for a 13 year old girl like Emma. Here’s how we did our version.

DIY Wall Decor

Materials:
Thumbtacks
Craft paint and small paintbrush
Piece of scrap foam core or cardboard
Small round doilies
Cupcake liners
Yarn for pompoms
Pompom maker
Double stick tape
Scissors
To Make:
Teen Room
1. If you want the thumbtacks a different color, stick them into the scrap foamcore or cardboard to make it easier to paint them. We painted ours a bright green, 2 quick coats and they were done.

2. We decided to add some pom poms to the centers of some of our flowery shapes, so we made a handful of small ones.

3. To make the doilies into flowers, I folded 4 doilies in half, then overlapped them in quarters. You can attach them to the wall with double stick tape, and then add either a pom pom or a thumbtack in the center.

4. We started placing the cupcake baking liner “small flowers” in the area designated for this installation, then filled out and fanned from there, adding the doily “big flowers”, really just ad libbing as we went. I think the pom poms added some nice contrast, and we scattered those around and even addd some later on. In the end, I added the leftover thumb tacks plain, around the “branches”. This is on the wall above Emma’s bed, and we decided to keep it fairly tight because of the new bed she has coming soon.

Granny Square Sampler Project- Week 8

Granny Square Sampler
We are hard at work on Emma’s room this week (pictures soon) and there is, as always, quite a bit of DIY involved. In fact, there are consecutive projects going on all over the house. Kind of chaotic! This all means no time for much crochet this week, as lovely as that sounds. But I did manage to complete half of this week’s assignment, I’m hoping to finish the rest over the weekend. I turned to my trusty crochet pinterest board and found one that I think adds some nice variety to our sampler. The Sunburst. This one feels retro to me, kind of 70’s, is that what you see? Anyway, her directions are written a little differently than what I’m used to. For example, she indicates the number of times you make a stitch after the stitch, (For example: “R1: Working in ring, sc 16“.) You’ll get it, I think this granny square is pretty straightforward.

I am so excited for this week’s square! It’s great for you beginners who are still getting the basic stitches down, but sort of adds a little flare. I found the video early this week and starting playing around with the square on Wednesday and let’s just say I think this is one of the prettiest squares I’ve ever tried. A variation of the African Flower Granny Square, its going to measure around 4 1/2″ square or so, done in our weight of yarn.READ MORE

The DIY Project I Can No Longer Put Off

Last year Peter and I talked with Emma about redoing her bedroom, but time got away from us and it just never happened. There was some much-needed purging and cleaning out done, but that was it. She’s now 7, I mean, 13. Lavender paint and sweet birdy paintings, nice as they may be, are not quite her style anymore. Far from it, actually.

Well, at the end of the first week of summer vacation (i.e, kid home, but I’m still working) has gone swimmingly. Ian’s school is out today, so next week the wise craft house is officially “summering”.
Bring it, summer. We’re waiting for you.

Hitting Restart

Hi.

I hesitate to write a post like this. Putting things like this out there creates a whole new sense of awareness that I’m never sure I want. I’m living it regardless, but now everyone else knows I’m living it. I have committed to it in a whole new way. But this morning I woke up and decided to write about it instead of drinking coffee.
