This type of embroidery work is traditionally done on gingham fabric. (Read all about my preferred size of gingham patterns here.) The stitches use the grid formed by the gingham pattern to create the individual patterns. There is lots of my favorite gingham to use for this type of embroidery in my shop to choose from, and more on the way.

The pattern also offers instructions on stitching these patterns onto a special Japanese cotton fabric I carry in my shop that has a dot grid pattern printed on the face. Use the dots to stitch the patterns, then put the entire panel in cool water to make the dots disappear! It’s like magic!
