THE RUBY RULER® IS AN ARTIST’S COLOR VALUE LENS AND CUTTING RULER ALL IN ONE
The Ruby Ruler® actually helps you design. Students come to my workshops with a collection of fabrics they have saved, hoping to finally use them all together in a quilt. But they don’t quite know how to make sense of all the different fabrics they have. It’s hard to know where to start.
How to create a quilt with so many different fabrics?
I designed the Ruby Ruler® to show how very easy it is to determine the light and dark values of any collection of fabrics and use it to create beautiful quilts!
Hold the Ruby Ruler® to your eyes as you look at the fabrics you have gathered for your quilt. By noticing and dividing the fabrics into dark and light values, a cohesive design can emerge from any collection of scraps or favorite fabrics. If they don’t seem to go together, don’t worry! A value based quilt will have a very distinct design that’s all your own.
The best part of using the Ruby Ruler® is that you can see even the most subtle value differences between fabrics, that you may not notice as easily without it. These subtle value differences are what gives quilts their sparkle. Trust what the ruler tells you, and you won’t be wrong!

This cute little tool is also a 5″ acrylic cutting ruler. Need to fussy cut a specific area out of a printed fabric? Lay your Ruby Ruler® on the fabric to see exactly where you’ll want to cut. Also use it to trim and square up your blocks, half square triangles, and other pieced units to 5″ square and smaller.
It will become an important part of your quilting tools. The Ruby Ruler® was created small enough to toss in your bag when you go to the fabric store.
At a quilting retreat, you don’t have to worry about weird, unexpected lighting situations, looking through the ruler will still tell you what you need to know about value. It’ll help you make decisions wherever you are pulling fabrics.
